What Past Volunteers Say

girl with camera

I spent three weeks with Underwater Africa and it has been an amazing experience. I had the chance to learn a lot about the local ocean and estuary ecosystems, thanks to Liv’s and Calum’s knowledge and passion. We set out overnight camera traps, analysed plankton samples, looked at seahorses and juvenile fish in the estuary reef. Mostly, I went on many dives, where I had the opportunity to observe these vibrant and stunning reef sites, and was lucky enough to be greeted by a giant manta ray during my last dive of the trip. On top of the research aspects, I learnt a lot about the local culture and people, making it a very enriching experience on all levels. During my stay, everyone took very good care of me and helped me with everything I needed. The local community is kind and cheerful, and the Barra-Tofo area is a little corner of paradise. Hopefully I will have the chance to come back one day, to see the results of this impactful work in terms of research and conservation, and to get the chance to see some whales during the right season. But for now just a big thank you to Underwater Africa for making this trip so memorable!
